Venice Biennale
'Out There: Architecture Beyond Building'
Identity, Scenography and Visual Communication;
Curator Aaron Betsky asked Thonik to come up with a design for the 380-metre-long Corderia at the 11th Architecture Biennale. Thonik did not want to divide up the space and decided to link the twenty presentations by architects with three-dimensional sculptures. Walls of black and white elements and a globe with a house on it visualized key words from Betsky's programme. In 2D the shape engendered a graphic style that reflected the dimensions and patterns of Venice. Five thousand plastic balls, which were later recycled, were made for the production of the word sculptures. When looked at from different angles the sculptures generated beautiful, unexpected patterns.
