Province Friesland
'Woordenstroom'
Typeface Design (Pentathonik);
The northern province of Friesland commissioned an art project for the navigational route between the cities of Lemmer and Delfzijl. For this project, called 'Woordenstroom' (Stream of words), designers were linked to poets. Thonik collaborated with George Moormann, whose poetic words were to adorn the walls of a lock. For this purpose Thonik wanted to design a new typeface positioned between the rigid forms of modernist typography and the floral patterns that flourished in design at the time. In a grid of pentagons - a shape one step ahead of a straight square - the characters were found for a new alphabet called Pentathonik. Applied to the walls of the lock these characters looked like reflections of a classic font in water.
