When director Sjarel Ex left Utrecht's Centraal Museum for Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, jokes where made that he exchanged a C for a B. So when his deputy in Utrecht Ranti Tjan was appointed as the new director of the art museum of Gouda, it seemed rational to stress the A in the museum's new identity. Thonik advised changing the museum's name, formerly known as the Catharina Gasthuis, into museumgoudA. The new name links the museum directly to the city. The notation ending with a capital A even brands the museum in free publicity and enables it to play with a gold A ('goud a' in Dutch) in all sorts of different fonts and patterns.
