MVRDV and Krystal
'Parkrand'
Visual Communication and Signage System;
Five apartment buildings linked by aerial walkways form one large building block in the western part of Amsterdam. In the design by MVRDV commissioned by development company Krystal the front façades are covered in black glazed bricks while the rear façades are white. Deliberate failures in the glazing of some bricks result in a subtle pattern of diagonals across the walls.
Asked to design a signage system for the building Thonik decided to use this pattern. The relatively small entrances were marked with large characters in black on white. In this case V, W, X, Y and Z proved to fit in best with the diagonal pattern.
